Visit the famous UNESCO’s World Heritage Site and ancient capital city of Thailand “Ayutthaya”
After hotel pickup, your vehicle makes the journey north from Bangkok to Ayutthaya Historical Park.
The old capital of Thailand (aka the Kingdom of Siam) from 1350 until 1767, Ayutthaya was largely destroyed by the Burmese and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of intact temples, monasteries, palace ruins, and beheaded Buddhist statues. On arrival, set out on foot with your knowledgeable guide who leads you to notable Ayutthaya temples and the ancient Royal Palace ruins. Marvel at the Buddha’s head resting in the tree roots overtaking Wat Mahathat and visit the well-preserved summer palace of King Rama IV with its mixture of Thai, Chinese, and Gothic architecture. All admission fees are included in the price of the tour. Complete your full-day excursion with a riverboat lunch cruise on the Chao Phraya River back to Bangkok.
Tuck into a delicious buffet lunch and enjoy views of temples lining the riverbank, such as Wat Arun, before your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.
Wat Mahathat Wat Mahathat, “the temple of the Great Relic” was one of the most important temples in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Located on the historical island the large monastery features a huge central prang, a very large principal viharn and ubosot and a great number of subsidiary chedis and viharns.
The upper part of its once massive central prang has collapsed. Today only the base remains.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet, also known as the “Temple of the Holy, Splendid Omniscient” was the holiest temple in Ayutthaya during the Ayutthaya period and until the city was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. It was the grandest and most beautiful temple in the capital and it served as a model for Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok
Vihara Phra Mongkhon Bophit Housing a large bronze seated Buddha image of 12.45 meters high (Phra Mongkhon Bophit), it was originally enshrined outside the Grand Palace to the east. It could be dated to the 15th and has a long history prior to being enshrined and to being covered nowadays with a Mondop. To know more, please ask our guide who will be delighted to provide you with further explanations.
Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Lokayasutharam) Wat Lokayasutharam is situated at Pratoochai District, behind the Ancient Palace and the Pratoochai Primary School, in the area 0f Wat Worapoh (Wat Rakhang) and Wat Worachettharam. Wat Lokayasutharam is 800 meters from Wat Phra Mongkon Bophit. Wat Worachettharam and Wat Worapoh are also closeby. Nevertheless, we had quite some difficulty finding Wat Lokayasutharam, likely our otherwise good Ayutthaya map, was a bit off the mark.
