FAQ (Exuma boat tour)

Most of these items are obvious, but here’s what I recommend you bring to Pig Beach:

  • Bathing Suit / Bikini
  • Beach Towel / Sarong (it was great being able to cover up when we weren’t in the water – but a beach dress would also work)
  • Camera or phone (fully charged, or with a portable charger)
  • Waterproof case or pouch for your smartphone: While it’s possible to get off the boat and walk through the shallow water to Pig Beach, it’s not possible to get your phone inside Thunderball Grotto without getting it wet. While most iPhones are water resistant these days, remember that it’s still not advisable to get salt water inside the charging port, since salt is highly corrosive and will damage your phone.
  • GoPro / underwater camera if you want to take underwater photos
  • Sunscreen & sunhat (especially if you’re taking a long boat ride from Nassau – the sun is relentless and shade on the boats is very limited)
  • Sunglasses
  • Goggles if you want to snorkel with the pigs & sharks / take underwater photos or videos. Your tour operator will most likely provide them, but double check when booking the tour.
  • Insect repellent (the mosquitos are quite aggressive!) – Amazon has several travel-sized bottles
  • Water and snacks (most of the boat operators have water and snacks on the boat, but if you drink more water than average and you consider yourself a big snacker, I’d recommend packing extra of both)
  • sweater or a light jacket – it can get breezy on the boat, especially if you’re on a speed boat. We also got caught in a rainstorm, and I wished I had a long-sleeve shirt or a light rain jacket while it was raining.
  • Cash or credit card if you want to buy something on one of the inhabited islands you stop at, and to tip your guide.

1: Allen Cay
Allan’s Cay is at the Exumas’ northernmost tip and home to the rare Bahamian iguana. Bring along some grapes and a stick to put them on, and these little guys will quickly become your new best friends
Get a close look at the magnificent protected ancient iguanas and the friendly local birds surrounding the island. Island is under supervision by its caretakes to ensure the safety of these beautiful creatures.

2: Pig Beach View the world-famous swimming piggies – walk and swim amongst them whilst being respectful of their environment and minding the instruction of their caretakers.

3: Black Point A buffet-style lunch is held at Balck Point at Lorraine’s local cafe. Guests will have an assortment of options in dishes to chose from, some of local flavor as well.

4: Norman’s Cay During the second half of the day on the way to a remote sandbar, guests will have the opportunity to explore the wreck of Pablo Escobar’s underwater plane
Norman’s Cay is a small Bahamian island in the Exumas, a chain of islands south and east of Nassau, that served as the headquarters for Carlos Lehder’s drug smuggling operation from 1978 until around 1982

5: Exuma Sand Bar
The Exuma sand bar is the definition of an oasis deep in the Bahamas. Its white sand exquisiteness and tropical waters make for an excellent destination on any Bahamas day trip to the Exumas. It is just one of many attractions within the vicinity of Staniel Cay – a stopping off point for many Exuma tourists.

Of all the sand bars in the Exumas, the Exuma sand bar at Pipe Creek stands out as one of the most spectacular in the Bahamas. Those that venture out to it will be treated to amazing shallow and narrow channels of crystal clear blues and stunning white sand beaches that peek out of the water at low tide. They will see exotic life under the sea and experience quiet seclusion like you can’t get in other parts of the Bahamas.

6: The Compass Cay location is filled with nurse sharks. Guests will have the ability to take pictures and swim amongst these creatures under the supervision of Compass Cay’s program instructors.

The sharks at Compass Cay Marina are a special species that go by the scientific name of Ginglymostoma Cirratum — or as most people call, Nurse sharks.

They grow to be over three meters in length at full growth and live up to 20-25 years. An adult nurse shark can even weigh up to 300 pounds — a massive mammal.

They are carnivorous animals but rarely feed like normal sharks. They live on the bottom of the seafloor, feeding off marine life in fairly shallow depths of the ocean.
